The Honor of Peonies

Acrylic and textured painting by Lana Shea

My mother had an established peony bed on the farm where we lived.  As children we used peonies to decorate the graves of veterans on memorial day at the Otho Cemetery.  How fitting that a symbolic meaning of peonies is honor.

When I had a home of my own, I dug up a few roots from mom’s peony bed to plant. It is an honor to enjoy the multiple layer of delicate pedals and beautiful fragrance each year as these elegant flowers glory in our front yard. Each year I recall lovely and rich childhood memories.
