Pretty Pea Soup

1 lb split peas
water (up to 3/4 of the pan)
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 onion (cut up and sautéed)
1/2 small bag of baby carrots (cut up)
a few stalks of celery (cut up)
1 bay leaf
dash of ground cloves
Optional: Add a small amount of ham or bacon for more flavor and to complete the low cost protein.
Bring to a boil (that takes about 10 minutes)
Once it boils, stir and turn burner on low and simmer for 1 hour.
Take out bay leaf
Taste and add more salt and pepper if it needs more flavor
